Dogs Available for Adoption Dogs Updated: 9/4/2010
Please Note: German Shepherd Rescue of Central New York, Inc. is not a shelter. The dogs in our care are either in foster homes or boarded in a private facility that is not open to the public . Dogs are shown by appointment only to individuals with an approved application. Applications are usually processed within 1-2 weeks of receipt. Sheba-Currently Under Evaluation
Sheba is an approximately two-year old female that found her way to a New York City shelter. No owner showed up to claim her, so GSRCNY committed to taking this pretty black and tan girl. She was just updated on shots, heartworm tested (negative), spayed, and microchipped. As soon as Sheba arrives, we will update here!
Thank you to the New York City Mayor's Alliance for transporting Sheba to us!
Thank you to Alison Miller for sponsoring Sheba in memory of her beloved Hunter! Hunter's memory is saving so many lives, thank you!! What a tribute to a beloved pet!! Thank you!!
Thank you to Diane Van Buren for sponsoring our beautiful Sheba!! Mandy-NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION-MANDY'S OWNERS WERE LOOKING FOR HER!!
Mandy is a 5-6 year old spayed female that was turned into an area dog warden as a stray. This pretty black and tan girl is very friendly. She has been good with us and the other dogs. She knows her basic obedience commands and is very well mannered. This dog has been well cared for. We can't believe no one missed her!! Mandy is updated on shots, spayed, heartworm tested (negative), and will be microchipped. We'll update when we know Mandy better. Pictures soon!
Thank you to Martha Mills and "Moose" for helping to get Mandy to GSRCNY!! You are her first "Guard Dog"!!
Thank you to Laurie Nemkonsky and GSRCNY's "Katie" for sponsoring Mandy!! Bonnie-New Arrival-Under Evaluation
Bonnie is an approoximately two year old female that was picked up by a local dog warden. This pretty girl spent the last week in a shelter that is full! They called and asked for our help. Bonnie has a tear in one ear. It looks like someone took a pair of scissors to her!! Fortunately, it does not take away from her beauty!! Bonnie has been very friendly with us so far. We do not know how she is with other animals at this point. She is very thin so we hope to get some weight on her soon. She is updated on shots and heartworm tested (negative). She will be spayed and microchipped. Watch here for updates on Bonnie.
Thank you to Karen Quinn-Cole for transporting Bonnie to us!! You are her first "Guard Dog"!!
Thank you to Bob and Melissa Bitting and family for sponsoring Bonnie!! You are her second "Guard Dogs"!!
Zoey-ADOPTED!!!!
Zoey is a 12 week old purebred German Shepherd female pup that just arrived. A woman was tagging along with her friend that was looking to buy a pup. When they found the conditions of this particular home, they both took a pup to get them out of the horrendous place they were living. Unfortunately, this woman was not in a position to care for a German Shepherd pup, so she called us for help. Zoey has had her first set of shots and has been wormed. She will be visiting our vet this week. We will be going through our approved applicant list and Zoey will only be placed within the Syracuse area as she will need to come back to us for spaying at the beginning of December. Please no phone calls on Zoey. If you wish to apply, we do encourage it!
Thank you to George and Karen Cole and their "pack" for fostering Zoey!!
Chauser-CHAUSER HAS FOUND A PLACE TO CALL HOME FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE!!
Chauser is an approximately eight-week old purebred German Shepherd pup that was brought into a vet's office to be euthanized by his breeder because he has been diagnosed with Patent Ductus Arteriosis. Fortunately, a vet tech intervened and saved this little guy!! Patent Ductus Arteriosis (PDA) is a vessel that connects the aorta to the pulmonary artery. When a puppy is a fetus they don't need the blood to go to the lungs, because they aren't using them. The Ductus Areteriosus shunts the blood away from the lungs. If this shunt does not close after the puppy is born it is a Patent (meaning open) Ductus Areteriosus, and if it continues to stay open then the blood from the aorta will shunt blood back in the pulmonary artery and overload the lungs then the pressure will switch and cause a right to left shunt which can cause deoxygenated blood getting to the hind legs that can cause problems as well such as seizure or hind end weakness.
The good news is that this is a very treatable condition. The bad news is it can be a costly surgery. Chauser is due to arrive on July 29 and will be immediately examined by GSRCNY's veterinary. Once we have a better understanding of what we need to do next, we will update here. Chauser is going right into a foster home where he will get much needed TLC. We will need your help though.....if you can be a guard dog for this little guy, he needs you!!! Help us to raise the funds to help Chauser!!!!
Update as of 8/4/10 - The quote is in from Cornell! We are awaiting an appointment with their cardiologist to determine the type of surgery Chauser will need. That diagnostic work up will be between $500-800. Surgery is likely to be around $3,000. But, we think this guy is worth every penny!!
Update as of 8/8/10 - Chauser is scheduled for a visit with Cornell on Thursday, August 12. We will update as soon as there is news!
Update as of 8/28/10 - Chauser has found a place to call home for the rest of his life!!! GSRCNY will continue to monitor his progress and update on our website so that everyone that has sponsored him can watch him grow!! Watch here for updates on this sweet boy!!

Mac is a year old male that was surrendered to a local shelter by his owner because he had become protective of their home. Mac is a beautiful red sable that is updated on shots and heartworm tested (negative). He will be neutered and microchipped. Mac is cautious with new people, but quickly becomes comfortable with the person holding his leash. We aren't sure how he does with other animals at this point. As soon as Mac has settled in, we will update!
Thanks to Diane Potts for transporting Mac to us! You are his first Guard Dog!!
Thank you to Dave Wolfanger for donating towards Mac's care. This donation is in memory of his beloved, bestfriend "Casey". Thank you Dave for helping another GSD in need!! Sirah-Available for Adoption
Sirah is an approximately six-month old black sable female that just arrived from a Long Island Shelter. This girl is a pistol! She is a high drive, high energy dog that needs a job and someone to make sure that she has one. If you are looking to do search and rescue work, she may be just the ticket!! Sirah is in foster care where she is living with four German Shepherds. She is spayed, updated on shots, heartworm tested negative, and will be microchipped. Watch here for updates on Sirah!!!
Update as of 8/8/10 - Sirah is doing well in her foster home. She is learning manners with both humans and animals. She has a great nose and a lot of potential as a working dog. She will work for treats, and takes them gently. She is good around people, but definitely prefers women to men. Because of her energy level, she is best suited for a home with older children (14+). She is also best suited as an only dog or with a large breed male, and not a large pack environment. Her energy level will need to be channeled, and she is going to need continued training to be successful in any home. Sirah will only be placed with a very seasonsed German Shepherd owner. This girl is always in motion!
Update as of 8/21/10 - We asked Sirah's foster family to give us an update on Sirah, and here is their "bullet list" of some "emerging behaviors":
Sirah will need Guard Dogs, can you help? If so, click here to learn more or Pay Pal us now:
Thank you to the Arnold Family and Pack for fostering Sirah! Buck-Available for Adoption
Buck is an approximately five month old male pup that is due to arrive on July 30. A family purchased him and immediately tied him outside because he "wanted to be with them too much"!! A neighbor convinced them to relinquish the dog to Rescue. Buck has been vaccinated and will be neutered as soon as possible. We have not met him yet, but we hear he is a real doll. More on Buck soon!
Update as of 8/3/10 - Buck is here and he was neutered and microchipped today! Buck is a very energetic pup that is extremely friendly. He is starving for love and attention! Buck will need a family committed to training and exercise. He is a smart boy that is looking to please. We anticipate he will be ready for adoption mid-August. Watch here for a better picture!
Update as of 8/21/10 - Buck has been neutered and microchipped and is ready for a home! This boy is sweet as pie! He will require an active home that is committed to a lot of exercise. He will also need training. He has been on a chain since eight weeks old, so he will need to learn to live in a house and bark when appropriate. Buck is good with other dogs (we have not yet cat tested him). He will need a large breed companion and maybe too much puppy for an older dog. If you are looking for a project, Buck needs you!!! We promise a new picture soon! We've been busy!
Thank you to Gary and Eline Whitehead for transporting Buck to GSRCNY.
Thank you to Kimberly Richardson for sponsoring Buck!!!
Sampson-Available for Adoption-Special Needs-Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI)
Sampson is an approximately two-year old male that just arrived!! Sampson was found as a stray in late June and this past week, he his way to us and what a find!! This beautiful boy has a heart of gold. Although he very much wants to be with humans, he has been good with female dogs. We would not place him with a male. We are not sure about cats at this point. He is housebroken and crate trained. Sampson will be visiting our vet this week. He needs shots updated and a heartworm test. He is very thin so he will also be wormed. He is already neutered. Watch here for updates on Sampson. He is not yet ready for adoption.
Update as of 8/3/10 - Sampson has been heartworm tested (negative) and wormed....he was FULL of whip worms. He is still very thin, but we are hoping that now that the worms are gone, he'll start to gain some weight. He is an active boy that settles down nicely on a walk. He is very friendly with everyone he meets. This guy will make a fine pet!
Update as of 8/21/10 - Well, we have figured out why Sampson is so thin and wasn't gaining weight. This boy has Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI), which is not new to GSRCNY or to the German Shepherd breed. Sampson will need enzymes to digest his food for the remainder of his life. In just two weeks, this boy has gained five pounds and his very "pancake looking" feet know resemble that of a fine working dog!!! GSRCNY uses human grade enzymes on its EPI dogs. The average monthly cost is $40. EPI is very manageable and a dog can have a great life as long as someone is committed to the enzymes. Sampson is worth it!!!
Thank you to Nicole McCann for being Sampson's first "Guard Dog"!!
Thank you to Alison Miller for her very generous donation in memory of her beloved GSD "Hunter". Thank you to Alison for once again donating toward Sampson's care! Your generosity and love of our breed is just amazing. Thank you! Alison will be hosting an event in New York City in September to benefit GSRCNY. All of this is in memory of Hunter. While this might be a hike for us Central New Yorkers, she has set a lofty goal for this event....she wants to raise $25,000!!! Check out her website and "Get Lei'ed for a Good Cause.....GSRCNY"! Help Alison meet her goal, even if it is from Syracuse!!
Thank you to Dave Wolfanger for donating towards Sampson's care. This donation is in memory of his beloved, bestfriend "Casey". Thank you Dave for helping a GSD in need!!
Sasha is an approximately 18-month old female that was surrendered to a Long Island shelter along with her brother Duke. The shelter was very overcrowded and forced to euthanize for space, so we said we'd take these two young dogs and find them their forever home.
Update as of 7/9/10 - Sasha and Duke have arrived! Sasha is a very femine black and cream girl that is spayed, updated on shots, and heartworm negative. She will be microchipped as well. Sasha is a very submissive girl that loves belly rubs! She has had a litter of pups recently, but she won't have to ever worry about that again! Sasha is very dependent on Duke so she is best suited for a home where there is another dog. She has lived in a house so she is likely housebroken. She cannot wait to find her new forever home. We'll update as we get to know Sasha better.
Update as of 8/1/10 - Sasha is show on the left working the crowd at the Syracuse Arts and Crafts Festival. This girl put on quite a performance. We are very proud of how well she behaved!! She stole the show!! Many thanks to Allie Larkin for being with us! Don't forget to check out her new book "Stay". Check out what Allie had to say about Sasha on her Blog!
Sasha will need Guard Dogs, can you help? If so, click here to learn more or Pay Pal us now:
Thank you to Diane Van Buren for being the first to sponsor Sasha!!
Thank you to Author Allie Larkin for sponsoring Sasha! Check out her website! Remsen-Available for Adoption
Remsen is an approximately 18 month old light sable male that just arrived from an area dog warden. Remsen and his canine pal were left behind when their owners moved. Both dogs were tied outside, with no food, water, or shelter for at least three days, maybe longer! Animal Control called the dog warden to help!! Remsen is a big dog that has just started to put some weight on. He has been very friendly with everyone he meets and so far seems to like other dogs. Remsen has had his vaccinations, but he does need to be heartworm tested and neutered. We will update on Remsen and post a picture soon!!
Update as of 6/16/10 - Good news!! Remsen is heartworm NEGATIVE. He is being treated for Coccidia and hook worms, but other than that, he is healthy! He will be neutered and microchipped in a couple weeks!
Update as of 7/19/10 - We are working with Remsen and expect him to be available for adoption at the end of July. Updates forthcoming.
Update as of 8/21/10 - Remsen is now available for adoption. He will require a strong handler and a person committed to training. Since Remsen spent most of his life tied to a tree, he will need to learn to live in a house. Remsen is friendly with people, and will probably be ok with a large breed female, although an introduction to any existing dog would need to be done before any adoption. We aren't recommending that Remsen live with a male canine, and he probably would not do well with cats. Remsen is now over 100 pounds so this powerful boy has a lot of love to offer!!!
Thank you to Diane Van Buren for being Remsen's first Guard Dog!!
Daisy-Available for Adoption
Daisy is an approximately 7-8 year old female that just arrived from a local veterinarian's office with a heartbreaking story! Daisy's owner wanted her euthanized because they were moving! Fortunately, the vet refused and called in Rescue to help this sweet senior girl who deserves to live the rest of her life with someone who will love her! We have no vet records on Daisy other than a Rabies shot in 2006 and a recent Bordatella. She will be completely vetted by GSRCNY's vet this week. Daisy is overweight, but we are confident that with a little diet and exercise, we'll have her looking great in no time. We brushed off about five pounds of matted hair!! Daisy is very sweet and gets along with everyone and so far other dogs too. Watch here for updates on this sweetheart!!
Update as of 7/14/10 - Daisy is doing great! She looks good and is moving much better these days! She was vaccinated this week and is scheduled to be spayed on July 26. She will be available for adoption after that.
Update as of 7/27/10 - We need prayers for Daisy!! She was supposed to be spayed on July 26, but instead the vet found a very large tumor, which was removed. We are awaiting pathology reports to determine what we do next. Watch here for updates on Miss Daisy!!
Update as of 8/7/10 - The pathology report is in and Miss Daisy's tumor was BENIGN!!!! She will be available for adoption very soon!! Can you give this sweet girl a home to live out her remaining years???
Update as of 8/21/10 - Daisy is ready for adoption. This sweet girl is healed from her surgery and ready to go "home"! Daisy would do best with a calm canine companion. She's not aggressive toward other animals, but she's startled by a pushy dog. Daisy loves people and adores short walks. If you have a big heart and a little love to share, why not share it with Daisy. This senior girl needs you!!!
Thank you to Diane Potts for getting Daisy to us and brushing out all of that matted hair! You are Daisy's first Guard Dog!!
Thank you to Last Hope Safe Haven for sponsoring Daisy!!
Many thanks to Tom Fox for sponsoring Daisy! She is very grateful and so are we!!
Thank you to Erin and John Kowalewski for sponsoring Daisy! This sweet girl is so deserving!! Aspen-Available for Adoption
Aspen is an approximately 5-6 month old male German Shepherd-mix puppy that GSRCNY was able to remove from a very neglectful situation. Aspen, along with his two littermate sisters, Dora and Gypsy, may have been abused and at the moment they are extremely afraid of humans. They have had very little human handling and never seen a leash or collar. They have been vaccinated and wormed. Once we can safely handle them, they will be spayed and neutered. It will be some time before these three sweethearts are ready for adoption. Watch here for updates on their progress. They WILL need guard dogs as they are a long-term project for GSRCNY.
Update as of 6/13/10 - Aspen is making amazing progress! This little guy wiggles his whole body when a human visits him. He loves to take treats and get rubbed. He solicits for more if you stop. Aspen has started leash training and is getting the hang of it. He will have his second round of shots this week and is scheduled to be neutered on 6/22. Once he has healed, we feel that with a patient person, he is ready for a home to call his own. He will need continued work, but he'll be ready for the next step.
Update as of 6/26/10 - Aspen has been neutered and microchipped and is ready for a home. Aspen loves people and solicits as many rubs as he can get. Aspen needs someone that will continue his socialization and training, but we think this guy is a gem!
Update as of 8/28/10 - Aspen is really growing and turning into a nice boy!! He is ready for a home where someone will continue with his training and socialization. He is a smart dog that learns fast and loves routine. He walks well on a leash and loves water. He still plays with his sister Dora but sometimes can be rough. He would need to be tested with a new companion to be sure it was a fit. Can you give Aspen the chance he so desperately needs???
Aspen is looking for Guard Dogs, can you help? If so, click here to learn more or Pay Pal us now:

Dora, along with her two littermates, Gypsy and Aspen, may have been abused and at the moment they are extremely afraid of humans.
Update as of 6/13/10 - Dora's progress is slow by steady. She is cautiously starting to trust humans again and realizing that no one is going to hurt her. She loves to take treats and wags her tail whenever a human talks to her. She still freezes when she is on leash, but we are working on that too. She is a sweet girl that just needs time. She will be updated on shots this week and spayed as soon as we feel she is ready.
Update as of 8/28/10 - Dora is ready for a home! Dora has been spayed, updated on shots, and microchipped. We have been working with Dora and she has made a lot of progress. She will need a patient person that is committed to socialization and training, but Dora is ready to take the next step. She is best suited for an adult home as children would be too much for her. She gets along with most dogs, but she would have to meet any potential new canine companion before an adoption.
Dora is looking for Guard Dogs, can you help? If so, click here to learn more or Pay Pal us now:

Gypsy, along with her two littermates, Dora and Aspen, may have been abused and at the moment they are extremely afraid of humans. They have had very little human handling and never seen a leash or collar. They have been vaccinated and wormed. Once we can safely handle them, they will be spayed and neutered. Update as of 7/19/10 - Gypsy continues to grow and mature in her foster home. She has had a tough week though. She came down with an upper respiratory infection and is also limping. As soon as her upper respiratory is gone, she will be X-rayed. We are hoping that she does not have an old injury from her previous abuser! We will update when we know more about this little sweetie! Dubi is a three-year old Shiloh Shepherd that just arrived from New York City. Dubi's owner is no longer able to care for this big handsome guy. Dubi has been with his owner since he was a pup. He is well trained and very friendly. He even knows his commands in English and Hebrew. He is updated on shots, heartworm negative, and will be neutered and microchipped as soon as we can get an appointment. Dubi would enjoy the company of a large breed female. Once we know this big guy better, we will update. Watch here!
Update as of 4/22/10-Dubi will be neutered on 5/4/10!
Update as of 5/4/10-Dubi was neutered today and did great! Watch here for updates and new pictures as soon as he is healed.

He is best suited in a home as an only dog and he will need a fenced yard because of his established prey drive for small animals. Dubi is a very smart dog that is loyal to his handler. If you want a bestfriend, Dubi is the dog for you!!
Thank you to Mary Lopata for sponsoring Dubi. You are his first "Guard Dog"!!

Update as of 4/1/10-We wish it were an April Fools Joke, but it is not. Joy came down with Parvo today. She is currently hospitalized and will likely be there for the next two weeks. This poor girl not only was dumped, but never vaccinated properly. We need your prayers and support for this sweet dog! Watch here for updates!
Update as of 4/6/10-If all goes well, Joy will be released from the vet tomorrow. This girl is one tough chick! She's doing amazingly well and is expected to fully recover. As soon as it is safe, she will be spayed.
Update as of 4/12/10-Joy was released from the vet on April 8. She is recovering nicely, and to her, she was never sick! This bouncy girl is hard to keep quiet. She will be spayed in approximately six weeks and available for adoption after that. Joy was one lucky girl. We are so glad she found us so soon. It truly saved her life.
Update as of 5/4/10-Joy is scheduled to be spayed on May 25.
Update as of 6/5/10-FINALLY!! Joy is ready for adoption! We are working on socializing Joy with both humans and other animals. She is walking three miles every other day and LOVES it! She is gaining confidence and learning to trust humans again. It's amazing what a little love does for a dog like Joy. Joy is spayed, updated on shots, microchipped and ready for a home of her own. We are hoping she will do ok with a large breed male, but we are still working on that and we are seeing improvement in her attitude toward other dogs. We promise new pictures soon.
Update as of 7/19/10 - Joy left GSRCNY on 7/14 with a police agency that is putting her through basic testing and training for K-9 work. If Joy does not pass the initial screening, she will be returned to GSRCNY and available for adoption after that. Watch here for Joy's progress!! We are all cheering for our girl!!
Update as of 8/17/10 - GSRCNY received its first update on Joy today! She is doing wonderful with her preliminary training and will be starting "official" training this week. If she makes it through the academy, we'll take a bus load of fans to her graduation!! We'll update when we hear more!!
Many thanks to Sharon, Doug, and Max Griffith for sponsoring Joy in her time of need. You are her first "Guard Dogs"!!
Thank you to our friends Eva, Rande, and Joe Lawrence for helping Joy! As usual, your ongoing support is appreciated by us and the dogs!!
Many thanks to Kathleen Sauro for her very generous donation toward Joy's care. You are a very special guard dog!!
Ginger-Available for Adoption
Ginger is a two year old female that found herself in a local shelter. We are told that she has been passed around to different owners, so this girl will need some stability in her life!! She is a petite, black and tan that is updated on shots. She will be heartworm tested, microchipped, and spayed very soon. We are told that she is not good with cats, and we are not sure about other dogs. We'll get better pictures and update once we know Ginger better.
Update as of 1/23/10-Ginger has arrived! This bouncy girl will need some work. She needs to be vaccinated, heartworm tested, and spayed. She is a very anxious girl that we are hoping will level off once she gets into a regular routine. So far she has a tough time with other dogs, and we were told by the shelter that she does not do well with cats. We are hoping to help Ginger with some of these issues. She is not yet ready for adoption.
Update as of 2/14/10-Ginger is being spayed on February 23.
Update as of 4/6/10-Ginger is doing well....energetic as ever! We wish she'd get along with other animals and we are still working on that, but for now, she needs to be the only dog.
Thank you to Victoria Celia for pulling Ginger from the shelter and transporting her to us! You are Ginger's first "Guard Dog"! Ollana-Available for Adoption
Ollana is an approximately 10 year old female that has been with us for nearly four years. She was owned and raised by a breeder that came from Germany. He lost his wife and then four years later he passed away too. Ollana was never bred, but she has lived her life in a kennel. She has never known the joys of having her own home.
Ollana truly loves belly rubs and craves attention! She is up-to-date on all vaccinations, heartworm negative, and spayed. Ollana does have an autoimmune eye issue that makes it difficult for her to enjoy being outside when it is sunny. Our vet recommends that she stick to the shadey areas. Ollana picks and chooses her canine friends, but she may be ok with a large breed male companion that is closer to her age. We do not recommend a female canine nor cats. We think Ollana will bond very closely with her "person". She is best suited for a quiet home with a woman as her primary care giver. She will also rquire a fenced yard. Is it you???
Thank you to Victoria Celia for her many donations toward Ollana's care!!
Many thanks to Debe and Dave Dube for ther numerous donations to help with Ollana
Thank you to Ollana's "secret guard dogs" who wish to remain anonymous.
Dennis Edwards and his pack have sent their love and support to Ollana!!

GSRCNY is currently holding Inky for Last Hope Safe Haven, Inc. however, if the right person comes along, we will place her in the Central New York area. Inky is a six-year old, all black female who was surrendered by her owners in Georgia. Inky is spayed and updated on vaccinations. She will need to be placed as an only pet. Inky is wonderful with people and a real sweet, mellow girl that would love to be in her own "forever" home very soon. Update as of 5/3/09-Inky has FINALLY found someone willing to give her a chance at a home life. Inky is currently in foster care with a woman that saw in her the same thing we do. A well mannered, sweet girl that is eager to please. First reports are that Inky is a perfect house dog. No accidents, no begging, no getting on furniture, and she sleeps all night! Inky loves to take walks and meet new people. Inky is finally proving what we have been telling people. This sweet girl is ready for her PERMANENT home!
Update as of 9/6/09 - Inky continues to flourish in her foster home. She ishousebroken, walks wonderfully ona leash, and her foster mom has found that Inky loves senior citizens. She gravitates toward them and is most comfortable with them. Do you know a senior citizen that would enjoy a great companion??
Update as of 1/23/10 - Inky has settled into home life nicely. She enjoyed an out-of-state trip to "Gramma's" for the holidays and did very well, We would still LOVE to find INky her forever home. Can you help??
Update as of 8/29/10 - Inky is still in foster care and still enjoy home life!
